VLC media player is now available on Apple TV
Popular among computer users multifunctional media player VLC has finally debuted on Apple TV.
Like the desktop version of the application, VLC on Apple TV supports a wide variety of non-standard, and seldom-used video formats. It also allows you to set the desired playback speed, to choose between several audio tracks and subtitles, as well as show the album art and a variety of information about artists while listening to streaming audio.
It should be understood that VLC player is a niche player: it’s main purpose is to play local content (often pirated), as it only requires a few simple ways to play these files on your TV.
Transferring files from a computer to the TV was the biggest challenge for developers of VLC. Web interface helped to overcome this and it allows to view stored content on the home PC and send necessary files on Apple TV. Lazy users can choose an easy road and ask for an application to search the local media servers and copy all the content stored on them. In the foreseeable future, VLC developers promise to add integration with various services including Dropbox, OneDrive and Box. This is already being tested.
