How to change WiFI channel?

The majority of people never look at their routers’ settings using out of box presets, however it’s not always the best option, as there is a bunch of settings that can influence the speed of your internet connection and the strength of the signal. One of the options is a channel of your WiFi signal.

If your home or office WiFi has a weak signal even when you are sitting close to the router, it might be a problem with a density of WiFi signals on some certain channel. For example, you neighbours or adjacent offices have the access point of the same model as you do and just interfere one another. It’s easy to fix.

First of all, you will need to check the channel map and identify what are the most busy channels and which one is free. To do that, simply download WiFi analyzer app to your smartphone.

For IOS, however, this very tool is unavailable for some reason, but you can try some other program, like Network Analyzer lite.

Launch the program and you will see the map of channels with and the list of WiFi access points using those.

As you can see on the picture, HITECH and HITECH guest networks are using the same channel, together with 2 more routers from neighbouring offices, and despite signals are quite strong it might be reasonable to switch one of the routers to less popular channel.

Now we need to go to our router settings.It’s pretty simple. Just type in the ip address of your router, usually it’s 192.168.0.1 and enter yuor admin credentials.

Again, out of the box that would be admin\admin and we would recommend to change those once you get to the router.

Routers have lot’s of settings and changing them without knowing what are they responsible for is not recommended, but in our situation we would need to change only the channel, usually it’s in the basic settings screen.
