What ISO 9001:2015 certifies, and what it does not

ISO 9001:2015 is a standard for a quality management system. It does not certify a product, a codebase or a single delivery. It certifies that an organisation runs its work through a documented, audited system: processes are defined rather than improvised, records are kept, deviations are recorded and corrected, and an independent auditor verifies all of it on a schedule.

The distinction matters when choosing a supplier. No certificate can promise defect-free software, and a vendor who claims otherwise is describing something ISO 9001 does not do. What certification does tell you is that there is a defined way work gets done, that it is written down, and that an external body with its own accreditation to protect has checked it and will return to check again.

Two details worth reading closely

Accreditation. Certification bodies are themselves accredited, and that accreditation is what gives a certificate weight. UKAS is the United Kingdom’s national accreditation body, recognised under the IAF multilateral agreement, which is why a UKAS-accredited certificate issued in Kyiv is recognised by a client in Chicago or Frankfurt.

The date range. ISO 9001 certificates run in three-year cycles with surveillance audits in between, and they are conditional: validity is subject to the continued satisfactory operation of the management system. A certificate describes an ongoing state, not a past exam. Ours has been renewed across successive cycles since 2017.

What the certified scope covers

The certified scope is specific: software development, quality assurance, customer’s support and technical support operations. Those four areas are what an auditor examined and continues to examine.

We state it precisely rather than implying the certificate blankets everything we do, because scope is exactly what a careful procurement review checks. If you are evaluating us for software development, quality assurance, customer support or technical support, the certified management system is the one running that work.

What a certified management system changes about a delivery

The standard is written in general management language, which makes it easy to nod at and hard to translate. In delivery work it comes down to a handful of concrete obligations.

  • Defined process instead of personal habit - how a requirement becomes a tested change, and who accepts it, is written down.
  • Records that outlive people - test evidence, review decisions and release approvals are retained, so a delivery stays auditable a year later.
  • Nonconformity and corrective action - a deviation is recorded, its cause examined, and the fix verified as effective. A defect fixed silently does not satisfy the standard.
  • Internal audits and management review - the organisation audits itself between external audits, so problems surface internally rather than at the client.
  • Continual improvement as an obligation - the system has to show it changes in response to what it learns. Standing still is an audit finding.

For a client the practical value is predictability: delivery does not depend on which individuals happen to be assigned, and the evidence trail behind any decision exists and can be produced on request.

How to verify it

Do not take a supplier’s word for a certificate, including ours. A certificate number, a named certification body and an accreditation mark are the three things that make independent verification possible, and all three are listed above.

Bureau Veritas maintains a public certificate directory, and UKAS publishes the accredited scope of the bodies it accredits. Certificate UA232208 can be checked against both. If a supplier cannot give you a number, a body and an accreditation, there is nothing to check.

We also work on the other side of this process: preparing a management system for ISO 9001:2015 or CMMI assessment is part of our compliance audit services, which is easier to explain having been through the audit ourselves, repeatedly, since 2017.
